Warning Signs of Suspension Failure
A healthy suspension will keep you driving smoothly, while also keeping you safe both when taking sharp corners and trying to suddenly stop. If your shocks/struts are shot, it could take roughly 20% longer for your vehicle to come to a full stop after you've commenced braking. Here's a look at six of the signs that you need suspension repair.
When you can clearly see that the pavement is smooth, but it feels like you're going over bumps, then you've got cause for concern regarding your suspension.
So long as you're taking sharp corners at a safe speed, you shouldn't feel a drifting sensation. However, if you do, then the culprit could be a faulty suspension.
"Nose Diving" Sensation
When shocks are shot, it could seem like your car is lurching at a downward angle when you hit the brakes.
Fails the Bounce Test
To help determine if your shocks/struts are worn out, there a simple test that you can conduct. First, make sure your vehicle is securely parked away from traffic. Then, go to the front end of your vehicle and press down on it with all of your strength and rock it a couple of times before releasing. You'll immediately then go around to the back end, where you'll do the exact same thing. When you let go, if the vehicle rocks more than once or twice, then it'll be worthwhile to have your suspension inspected by a mechanic.
Bald Spots on Tires
Failing shocks/struts can lead to uneven tire wear, which can consequently result in bald spots.
If you take a look under your car and can see oil leaking out onto your shocks, then you're likely due for replacement.
